Mojo Case Study
Genre: Indie/AlternativeAge: 20 to 40
Gender: Male
Social Grade: B
Ethnicity: White
Interests: All things music related
Masthead:
The masthead is large, yet obscured, but it is clear that is says Mojo. Which refers to being magical or having some sort of magical connection or spell placed upon something.
Mojo connotes the thought of magical goings on, and that's what and indie and alternative music is. You could come across a hidden gem that really connects with you and every time you here it it's a magical experience.
The font is large and bold, yet blocked out due to the portrait photo being in front of it. This may attract the audience due to the fact that it is hidden, curiosity emerges. However this is probably not the case and it's just very attractive due to the fact that its very large.
The colour white has been used for the masthead, and connotes purity, greatness and power (e.g. a powerful monarch). This would attract the audience due to how well it contrasts the blue of the rest of the magazine.
Colour Pallet:
The colours within the colour pallet are Yellow, White, Blue and Red.Yellow connotes the joy you'd experience from reading the magazine. White connotes the coolness of the magazine. Blue connotes how clearly it flows and transfers. Red connotes how passionate the magazine is about music.
All these colours would attract the audience because the flow and balance between them is very good, and they all work together.
Layout:
The layout is effective, it is stylish and suits the space. It connotes the content as the music it's about is rather stylish itself, many people listen to it or have heard it and like it.
The layout attracts the target audience as there is a large face on the front with a name beneath it, then detailing how songs saved his life.
Images:
The main image is a portrait shot, and it's of Dave Grohl. He looks quite angry, the lighting upon him lights up his temples and cheeks making him appear to be rather faint and shiny.
The main image attracts the audience as it involves a large man.
There are two other images, the first being a cover of a Nirvana album. It depicts a lot of people, arms raised up and another object up in the air. The second is of a man in front of a red background, holding a guitar, singing into a microphone.
Teasers/Typography/Lexis:
The main image is of Dave Grohl, a member of Foo Fighters but he was also the drummer for Nirvana. So by using both images, it could hint towards a reminiscence from Dave. The language is rather informal, for example "The songs that saved his life... Nirvana reading '92".
The language represents the audience because they themselves are informal, as is the content within the magazine as Indie and Alternative music is informal.
The punctuation used is rather lacking; as there isn't a large variety; however there is some occasional usage. An exclamation is used in the sentence "Lou Reed unseen!" and an ellipsis is used in the sentence "The songs that saved his life... Nirvana reading '92".
Other Features:
Other things featured on the cover are the Bar Code, the Issue Number (159)These features aren't all that big, yet are still noticeable.
They are the size they are as to not draw the attention of the audience away from the main parts of the cover that are featured on the cover.
