Sound

There are two categories of sound in film. Diegetic and Non-diegetic
Diegetic is sound that the character can hear.
Non-diegetic is sound that the characters can not hear but the audience can (it's usually put in to add atmosphere).

Examples

Diegetic: Dialogue, ambient sound along with sound effects.
Non-diegetic: Music, voice over and sound effects.
