Revision Task: How Does Diegetic & Non-Diegetic Sound Represent the Target Audience?

Somebody To You by The Vamps:
Target Audience (Teenage/Female and Male/Any Nationality/E to C3):

Representation Theory/Quote
Lyrics that support this theory
Laura Mulvey (1975) argued women in the media are used as; ‘Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience,’ (Mulvey, 1975).

've got your photograph
But baby I need more than that
I need to know your lips
Nothing ever mattered to me more than this (Yeah you!)
Gauntlett (2002) argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they are shown as, ‘Alpha males who control the action with violence,’ (Gauntlett, 2002).

I used to be so tough
Never really gave enough
Mackillon argues something slightly difference, ‘Males are now shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image,’ (Mackillon, 2002).

Stanley Hall argues youths are; ‘depressed’ and are likely to seek excitement through; crime, sex, drink/drugs,’ (Hall, 1904).

Dick Hebdige (1988) argued youths are stereotyped as mixed metaphors of; “Youth as fun,” and “Youth as trouble maker.”

Everybody's trying to be a billionaire
But every time I look at you I just don't care
Richard Butsch (1992) who says working class males in the media are presented as; "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well-intentioned but dumb. In almost all working-class series, the male is flawed, some more than others..

Look at me now, I'm falling
I can't even talk, still stuttering
This ground of mine keeps shaking
Oh oh oh, now!

S.Hall said in 1981, blacks are stereotyped as; "The social problem," (Hall, 1981) and this is a stereotype that has been embraced by Hip-Hop culture.

Malik points out the obvious 1998); “Many feel that Black and Asian audiences are still not sufficiently catered for and that insensitivity towards issues of race and ethnicity still exist. The reality of a lived multiculturalism is not represented in the British media."

Keith Gandal's, in 2007 he said that target audiences are drawn in by the; "Sentimental rags-to-riches story,"

Analysing Music Videos: How is sound used to Represent/Attract a target audience?
Within the song 'Somebody to You' by The Vamps there is a lot of Diegetic music. The group is on a beach and they play their instruments, but every so often it cuts to another scene where the group is interacting other people, making some of the music Non-Diegetic. This represents and attracts the target audience (Generally white, straight, teenage girls and possibly teenage boys with the social grade E to C3). This done is a multitude of ways.

First off, the sexualisation of females occurs when the lyrics, "I've got your photograph, But baby I need more than that, I need to know your lips, Nothing ever mattered to me more that this (Yeah you!)" This makes the song relatable to the males to listen to it, as when a guy has a crush that thought tends to run through his head quite often. This fits two representation theories, the first being Laura Mulvey's theory that argues that females are presented as; 'Erotic objects of desire for males on
screen and the audience,' (Mulvey, 1975). The second is Stanley Hall's theory that youths seek excitement through sex.

Secondly, in the very first verse, the representation of being an Alpha Male appears. This is due to the lyrics "I used to be so tough, Never really gave enough." This supports Gauntlett's theory that some men are; 'Alpha males who control the action with violence.' Whilst the quote  may not necessarily hint towards anything violent, the protagonist still depicts himself as someone who was formerly tough, which could suggest being violent.

Thirdly, The Vamps sing about how "Everyone's trying to be a billionaire, But every time I look at you I just don't care". Most people can relate to wanting to be billionaire, it's quite a common aspiration. But anyone who is heavily infatuated will know that being around the person they like will be enough for them, when they are around their crush they don't need to be famous. Yet this also relates to the 'Youth is fun' theory Dick Hebdige (1988). This is due to the thought process of wanting to become a billionaire and not really caring, because not having any cares and being free is fun.

Lastly, in the chorus the representation theory on how; 'middle class-males are well intentioned but buffoons,' (Butsch, 1992). The lyrics, "Look at me now, I'm falling, I can't even talk, still stuttering, This group of mine keeps shaking, Oh oh oh, now!" are proof of this, as it's backed by something that means well, but is still rather dumb or can come across as silly. For example if you see a girl you like and you start stuttering she may laugh a bit, and what's fuelling it is well intentioned but you can come across as a bit of an idiot.

Black Magic by Little Mix:
Target Audience (Teenage/Female/Any Nationality/E to C3):

Representation Theory/Quote
Lyrics that support this theory
Laura Mulvey (1975) argued women in the media are used as; ‘Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience,’ (Mulvey, 1975).

Take a sip of my secret potion
One taste and you'll be mine
It's a spell that can't be broken
It'll keep you up all night
Gauntlett (2002) argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they are shown as, ‘Alpha males who control the action with violence,’ (Gauntlett, 2002).

Mackillon argues something slightly difference, ‘Males are now shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image,’ (Mackillon, 2002).

If you're lookin' for Mister Right
Need that magic
To change him over night
Here's the answer
Come and get it
Stanley Hall argues youths are; ‘depressed’ and are likely to seek excitement through; crime, sex, drink/drugs,’ (Hall, 1904).

Dick Hebdige (1988) argued youths are stereotyped as mixed metaphors of; “Youth as fun,” and “Youth as trouble maker.”

Analysing Music Videos: How is sound used to Represent/Attract a target audience?
Within the song 'Black Magic' by Little Mix, Diegetic and Non-Diegetic music in order to represent and the attract the target audience. The group 'Little Mix' sing in a school and use it in order to portray the story that is told on the song.

Firstly, the sexualisation of females occurs in the song quite quickly. When the lyrics "Take a sip of my secret potion, One taste and you'll be mine, It's a spell that can't be broken, It'll keep you up all night". This connotes something rather sexual, due to it saying 'It'll keep you up all night' and the lyrics 'Take a sip of my secret potion' can connote something like oral sex. This represents (Mulvey's, 1975) theory that women in the media as erotic objects of desire. This also represents the target audience as people tend to get distracted by sexual things and would probably sacrifice things in order to do it, including sleep.

Secondly, the sexualisation of males occurs in the song when the lyrics "If you're lookin' for Mister Right, Need that magic, To change him overnight, Here's the answer, Come and get it at a knocked down price". This sexualises males as it shows that they are being altered and changed in order to be a perfect boyfriend. This shows Mackillon's (2002) theory that males are objects of desire who are more concerned with their image.

Finally, Dick Hebdige's (1988) theory on how youth is fun. This is due to the usage of 'Black Magic' which is imaginary and is something that is rather fun and is the basis of many games.

The Vamps - Somebody To You

Yeah you!
Yeah you!
I used to wanna be
Living like there's only me

And now I spend my time
Thinking 'bout a way to get you off my mind (yeah you!)

I used to be so tough
Never really gave enough

And then you caught my eye
Giving me the feeling of a lightning strike (Yeah you!)
Look at me now, I'm falling
I can't even talk, still stuttering
This ground of mine keeps shaking

Oh oh oh, now!
All I wanna be, yeah all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you
All I wanna be, yeah all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you
Everybody's trying to be a billionaire
But every time I look at you I just don't care

'Cause all I wanna be, yeah all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah
Is somebody to you (yeah you!)
I used to ride around
I didn't wanna settle down
But now I wake each day
Looking for a way that I can see your face (Yeah you!)

I've got your photograph
But baby I need more than that
I need to know your lips
Nothing ever mattered to me more than this (Yeah you!)
Look at me now, I'm falling
I can't even talk, still stuttering
This ground of mine keeps shaking
Oh oh oh, now!
All I wanna be, yeah all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah

Little Mix - Black Magic

All the girls on the block knocking at my door
Wanna know what it is make the boys want more
Is your lover playing on your side?
Said he loves you
But he ain't got time

Here's the answer
Come and get it
At a knocked down price
Hey
Full of honey
Just to make him sweet
Crystal balling
Just to help him see
What he's been missing
So come and get it
While you've still got time
Hey
Get your boy on his knees
And repeat after me, say
Take a sip of my secret potion
I'll make you fall in love
For a spell that can't be broken
One drop should be enough
Boy, you belong to me
I got the recipe
And it's called black magic
(And it's called black magic)
Take a sip of my secret potion
One taste and you'll be mine
