Radio 1 Live Lounge Case Study

We had to find an artist who has performed another singer's song, so I have decided to do P!nk's Live Lounge rendition of Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me'.

She performed it on the 8th September 2017, but Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me' was originally released on the 18th May 2014

Female Gender Representation (Mulvey, 1975)
Male gender as alpha male (Gauntlett, 2002)
Male gender as sex object/new aged male (Mackillon, 2002)
Youth as depressed law breaking drink/sex obsessed rebel (Hall, 1904)
Youth as fun (Hedbirdge, 1988)
Black as criminal (Hall, 1981)
Working class as well intentioned but dumb (Butch, 1992)

Song Title & Band/Artist: Stay With Me by P!NK
Target Audience (age/gender/nationality/social grade): 20 / Female / White / C3 to B

Representation Theory/Quote
Lyrics that support this theory
Laura Mulvey (1975) argued women in the media are used as; ‘Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience,’ (Mulvey, 1975).

Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me
Gauntlett (2002) argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they are shown as, ‘Alpha males who control the action with violence,’ (Gauntlett, 2002).

Mackillon argues something slightly difference, ‘Males are now shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image,’ (Mackillon, 2002).

Stanley Hall argues youths are; ‘depressed’ and are likely to seek excitement through; crime, sex, drink/drugs,’ (Hall, 1904).

Why am I so emotional?
No it's not a good look, gain some self control
And deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt
Dick Hebdige (1988) argued youths are stereotyped as mixed metaphors of; “Youth as fun,” and “Youth as trouble maker.”

Richard Butsch (1992) who says working class males in the media are presented as; "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well-intentioned but dumb. In almost all working-class series, the male is flawed, some more than others..

Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man
S.Hall said in 1981, blacks are stereotyped as; "The social problem," (Hall, 1981) and this is a stereotype that has been embraced by Hip-Hop culture.
Malik points out the obvious 1998); “Many feel that Black and Asian audiences are still not sufficiently catered for and that insensitivity towards issues of race and ethnicity still exist. The reality of a lived multiculturalism is not represented in the British media."

Keith Gandal's, in 2007 he said that target audiences are drawn in by the; "Sentimental rags-to-riches story,"

Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?
Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me
Why am I so emotional?
No it's not a good look, gain some self control
And deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt
Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me
Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me
Oh, won't you stay with me?
'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love it's clear to see
But darling, stay with me

Exam Style Question:

How does Diegetic and Non Diegetic sound attract and represent the target audience?

Within the song Stay With Me, originally performed by Sam Smith but covered, by P!NK diegetic sound and non diegetic is used in order to attract the target audience as well as represent them. This is done through the use of the lyrics, which are delivered as diegetic and non diegetic when you watch the video on the live lounge website. The accompanying music also represents the audience through the beats used.

Within the first verse a reference to (Butsch, 1992) representation theory is present. This can be seen within the lyrics, "Guess it's true, I'm no good at a one-night stand But I still need love cause I'm just a man." This relates to (Butsch, 1992) theory that working class men within the media are represented as idiots, or rather well intentioned but dumb. This represents the target audience as what the lyrics say are true, everyone just wants to be loved and anyone can relate to that.

The next theory that gets represented is that of (Mulvey, 1975) 'females being represented as sex objects within the media'. The lyrics that support this are, "Oh, won't you stay with me? 'Cause you're all I need This ain't love it's clear to see But darling, stay with me." This represents (Mulvey, 1975) theory because it details one night stands and how empty they are which shows how meaningless it is apart from a way to have intercourse. This represents the target audience as, being completely honest, sex is a large driving force in the minds of many, usually ending with a one-night stand with someone they've never met before and then waking up feeling no attachment to who they were with.

The final theory (Hall, 1904) states that all youths are depressed and seek excitement through drugs and sex. The lyrics that support this are, "Why am I so emotional? No it's not a good look, gain some self control And deep down I know this never works But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt." You can easily see how depressed this person is, they just lay there and are hurt due to having no one to love, making him resort to having a one-night stand. This represents the target audience as having no love results in separating yourself from others and becoming very reserved and eventually becoming depressed due to the lack of interaction.
